AQUILA - 1970

Изображение Изображение

Цитата:
Welsh band Aquila arose from the ashes of late 1960's band BLONDE ON BLONDE. Founding guitarist Ralph Denyer left that band in 1970 to work on his Aquila project. Blonde on Blonde recruited new vocalist/guitarist David Thomas (an old school friend of Denyer) to replace Denyer, and went on to record their best album "Rebirth".
Aquila's music, while substantially based in art rock, draws in influences from a diverse range of influences, including jazz and heavy rock. Deyner was the clear leader of the band, writing all the songs on their sole release, a self titled album.
Quite what happened to the band thereafter, and why they split up so quickly is something of a mystery, especially since they were signed to a major label (RCA). Wind instrumentalist George Lee joined ARRIVAL, a mainly vocal collaboration who enjoyed brief singles success (before his arrival with "Friends". (Answers.com notes that this is the same George Lee who was born in Ghana, real name Kwame Narh Kojo Larnyoh, who was a member of Burning Spear and Toots & the Maytals, but I suspect this is inaccurate.)
No photos of the band appear to exist, even the images on the album sleeve are sketches of each band member. The image on this page is taken from the LP sleeve.
The sole "Aquila" album ended up in the bargain bins of the UK, but ironically, is now a sought after rarity. by Bob McBeath, Scotland

Walking on the edge of Progressive Rock, Aquila remains an underrated relic from the good and old Seventies. Despite Ralph Denyer weak vocals, the band develops an intelligent sound blend, supported by Phil Childs (bass guitar), George Lee (wind instruments)and Martin Woodward (keyboards). This triumvirat breaks the rules on "The Aquila Suite", a complex marathon that knocks down some "third-class" bands those days. Great, even with a poor TRC release!! by Chrotalus, Rateyourmusic

Ralph Denyer - vocals, electric & acoustic guitars
Phil Childs - Fender bass, piano
George Lee - flute, alto, soprano, tenor & baritone saxes
Martin Woodward - Hammond organ
James Smith - drums, timpani, various percussion

WALRUS - 1970

Изображение

Цитата:
"Eight raving freaks playing their own brand of heavy, brassy, funk. They use brass with imagination, which leaves many beautiful and weird pictures in mind. They are tastefully heavy, definitely habit forming, as I think you will find after listening to the first few bars. Open your mind and take a journey with them on this their firs album.....Karma" Jerry Floyd

"Oh really" David Hitchcock

A jazzy/buesy progressive outfit. They utilised horns but it's some of the guitar leads which catch the ear. Roger Harrison guested on drums on the opening cut "Who Can I Trust ?" and their cover of Traffic's "Coloured Rain". Most of the material was written by basist Steve Hawthorn. Aside from "Who Can I Trust ?", his better numbers include "Why", which is quit mellow with lots of flute, the jazzy ?Turning" which starts with a spoken monoloque from Hawthorn and the final track "Tomorrow Never Comes".

STEVE HAWTHORN: bass guitar, JOHN SCATES: lead & rhythm guitar, NICK GABB: drums, BARRY PARFITT: organ & piano, NOEL GREENWAY: vocals, DON RICHARDS: trumpet, ROY VOCE: tenor sax, BILL HOAD: soprano, alto, tenor & barito saxes, clarinet, flute, alto flute, ROGER HARRISON: drums, cowbell, tambourine, claves

WOODY KERN - The Awful Disclosures Of Maria Monk 1969

Изображение

Цитата:
Note Roaming around the borders of psych, prog & British blues, Woody Kern recorded this long-lost 1969 album - never before released on CD. It featured the talents of future Roxy Music bassist Rik Kenton & multi-instrumentalist John Sanderson, & displayed a verve & vision which deserved a better fate than decades of indifference. This long-overdue reissue, which includes their ultra-rare single mixes, finally sets the record straight. Includes two bonus tracks, 'Biography' (Mono Single Version) & 'Tell You I'm Gone' (Mono Single)

Osmosis - Osmosis (1970, Remastered 2007)

Изображение

Изображение

Страна: US
Стиль: Jazz-, Psych-, Raga-Rock, Proto-Prog

Цитата:
US psychedelic progressive rock with jazz influences feat. Charlie Mariano. Originally released on RCA this 1970 progressive Jazz rock outfit created a full blown rock based performance with two drummers. The wall of sound was amazing with alto and soprano saxophones- courtesy of the great Charlie Mariano, whose career since 1944 has included bebop with Shelly Manne and electronic fusion with Eberhard Weber's Colours - wailing over the wall of sound. The mood ranges from spacey and saxy to (as evidenced on title track) full-on heavy stoner acid doom.

Цитата:
Nothing sounded this innovative at it's given time. They opened for the Zappa bands and Miles Davis at "The Boston Tea Party" in Boston. A great Filmore style concert hall-club in Boston.

In this record and the live gigs. Mariano was playing Alto saxophone and soprano saxophone. Flute and nagaswaram. Within a full blown rock based volume setting with two drummers. The wall of sound was amazing. Considering Charlie always played strong, this was a real event to hear. This band OSMOSIS was on a world based level with any major rock band. They could of easily had the cult following that Jerry Garcia did with the Grateful Dead or even the song writing influence that other major stars did in that time period. After all this was 1970. There was not a "Bitches Brew" recording by Miles Davis yet, and no Brecker or Sanborn sax sonics had yet to appear.

THIS BAND was one of the pioneer bands of the day. And-one of the most interesting.

Цитата:
An obscure and really excellent album. Late sixties Jazz-Rock spotlighting more of a Psychedelic style with some early Prog influences. At times sinister and crazy, at other - peacefull and extremely melodious. Just amazing!

OXFORD CIRCLE - Live At The Avalon 1966

Изображение

Цитата:
They were four white kids in Sacramento, California in 1966 & they sound like they've got more soul than you'd bet white kids for could ever muster. The album I fell in love with that day at EM was 'Live at the Avalon 1966' and it includes such classics as 'We gotta get out of this place', 'Mystic Eyes', 'I'm a man' and of course, 'Baby Please Don't go'. The reviews of their live performances gush with the energy they brought to the stage, and their location of 90 miles NE of San Francisco and close to Davis, CA (college town) did wonders for their visibility. The original line-up was Debner Patten, Paul Whaley, Jim Keylor & Gary Yoder. The band's first show as Oxford Circle (previously known as The Hide-a-ways) was in the first months of 1966, and in the brief time they were Oxford Circle they became a large regional presence. However, due to personnel changes, personal issues & members moving up to San Francisco, the final Oxford Circle show was in July of 1967. By Fall of '67 a few members had formed Kak, but this band was a memory in just over a year.

GARY LEE YOLDER - vocals, guitar, harmonica, DEHNER PATTEN - lead guitar, vocals, JIM KEYLOR - bass, vocals, PAUL WHALEY - drums, vocals

AYNSLEY DUNBAR BLUE WHALE - 1970

Изображение

Цитата:
This 1970 album by the UK drummer (worked in zappa band) includes four lengthy progressive jazzy pieces as well as a 16 minute version of Zappa's "Willie The Pimp". Don't think it's all percussion though, as twin lead guitars, keyboards and a brass section all jostle for position.

AYNSLEY DUNBAR - drums; PAUL WILLIAMS - vocals; IVAN ZAGNI, ROGER SUTTON - guitar;
CHARLES GREETHAM - saxophone; EDWARD REAY-SMITH - trombone; TOMMY EYRE - piano; PETER FRIEDBERG - bass guitar

SIMON DUPREE AND THE BIG SOUND - Part Of My Past

Изображение

Цитата:
Simon Dupree and the Big Sound was a British pop band formed by three brothers, Derek Shulman, born 1947 (vocals), Phil Shulman, born 1937 (vocals, saxophone, trumpet), and Ray Shulman, born 1949 (guitar, violin, trumpet, vocals). They started as The Howling Wolves, and then became The Road Runners, playing R&B around the Portsmouth area, home of the Shulman brothers. Making up the rest of the group were Peter O'Flaherty (bass), Eric Hine (keyboards), and Tony Ransley (drums).
Their first few singles, notably "I See The Light" (1966), failed to chart and they only broke through at the end of 1967 with the psychedelic "Kites", a Top 10 hit in the UK Singles Chart. Regarding themselves as blue-eyed soul brothers, they hated it as it was so unrepresentative of their usual style. The follow-up, "For Whom The Bell Tolls", was only a minor hit, and a subsequent single "Broken Hearted Pirates", featuring an uncredited Dudley Moore on piano, made no headway at all.[citation needed]
A then unknown keyboard player by the name of Reginald Dwight was hired to fill in for an ill Eric Hine and he joined them on a 1967 tour in Scotland. They were asked to allow him to stay on, and he was almost recruited as a permanent member. They politely rejected the chance to record any of his compositions (although they did ultimately record "I'm Going Home" as the B-side of their final (contractually obligated) single,) and laughed when he told them he was adopting the stage name of Elton John.
Frustrated as being seen as one-hit wonders being pushed by their record label as a pop group rather than the soul band they had always intended to be, they disbanded in 1970 and the Shulman brothers went on to form the successful progressive rock group Gentle Giant. ~ wikipedia.org

The group released two albums; Without Reservation, on Parlophone Records (1967), and a compilation Amen (1980). A more recent set, Part Of My Past (2004), includes all their singles, album tracks and previously unreleased material prepared for their second album, release of which was cancelled at the time.

Copperhead – s/t (1973, Columbia - 2001, Acadia)

Изображение

Copperhead was a band organised by guitarist John Cipollina after he left Quicksilver Messenger Service in 1970. Cipollina, who had been a member of Quicksilver since its formation and whose lead guitar playing was its signature sound, had grown increasingly dissatisfied after the return of band founder Dino Valenti from a prison term, when the group grew larger and he found he had less space to play. He had also grown increasingly interested in playing sessions, which the band discouraged. The early days of Copperhead were casual, with the group consisting of a loose aggregation of people playing gigs with Cipollina. Eventually it coalesced into a quartet consisting of Cipolliana on lead guitar; Gary Philippet on vocals, second guitar, and organ; Jim McPherson on vocals, bass, and piano; and David Weber on drums. The group was initially signed to the Just Sunshine label run by Michael Lang, one of the organisers of Woodstock. But in 1972 it was signed to a major-label record deal by Clive Davis at Columbia and recorded its debut album, Copperhead, released in the spring of 1973. Unfortunately, Davis was fired from Columbia shortly after the album's release, an action that doomed any developing band that had been signed under his aegis. The album went nowhere, and when Columbia refused to release their second album, Copperhead folded. Cipollina went on to play in many different bands before dying in 1989.
